I love to topwater for bass. There's nothing like a bucketmouth busting a surface bait. It is one of the most thrilling things in bass fishing. Of course, crank baits, jigs or the soft plastic baits will probably put more fish in the boat. There is a lot to be said for this type of fishing, also.

The bottom line is there are many ways to catch bass and everyone has their favorite. I'll bet, however, that most fishermen are not tied to one method if it's not productive. They will go through their entire tacklebox until they either find something that works or they're too tired to fish any more.
